La Lucia Ridge

The La Lucia node forms part of the Great Umhlanga area and is situated just across the M41 from the heart of Umhlanga, in the northern area of Durban. La Lucia is predominantly known as a residential node but consists of commercial and retail sectors. The area is a 15-minute drive from the Durban city center, 20 minutes from King Shaka International Airport, and 5 minutes from Gateway Shopping Centre. The N2 freeway and M4 highways serve this region, allowing for the easy movement of people in and out of the area. The commercial sector in La Lucia was the first area blue-chip tenants looked to make their homes when business started moving North of the Durban CBD. Some of the first movers were the likes of Unilever and Aspen who are still located in the area. The major retail development in the area is La Lucia mall which has just gone through a major upgrade and holds most major retailers. La Lucia is made up of A and B-Grade buildings with most of them being smaller standalone properties situated in secure office parks. It offers larger tenants the opportunity to secure a stand-alone building for themselves with smaller tenants split the buildings. The La Lucia Office Parks area has reached maturity and has been stable over recent years without significant movement or development. The area stays attractive because of the location and lower rentals compared to Umhlanga. The majority of the buildings are located within secure office parks with boom gate access, 24-hour security guards, and electric fences.
