Area Profile: Roodepoort

Roodepoort is one of Johannesburg’s well known districts located on the borderline of Johannesburg and the West Rand. Popular for its red soil, growing residential area and partially dominated light industrial and small businesses.

The history of Roodepoort

Roodepoort became known years back in 1884 when Fred Struben discovered the first payable gold in the area which he named Confidence Reef, a rocky outcrop in the centre of Roodepoort. During this time Roodepoort consisted of 9 farms. Four of the farms – Roodepoort, Vogelstruisfontein, Paardekraal and Wilgespruit. These farms were soon declared public diggings after the discovery of gold captured the interests of diggers and soon became a shantytown. The Goldfields Diggers Committee was formed in 1888 and represented the farmers’ interest. This became the first form of local government known as Roodepoort-Maraisburg.

Roodepoort has evolved into a popular urban area, predominantly residential, with supporting urban amenities for an estimated population of 300 000 residents. The growing population created a need for residential development leading to many sectional title holdings developed along Hendrik Potgieter road.  Suburbs in Roodepoort include Allen’s Nek, Helderkruin, Ruimsig, Featherbrooke, Willowbrook, Little Falls, Strubensvalley, Constantia Kloof, Florida and Weltevreden Park.  

High-end secure residential estates in Roodepoort include Ruimsig Country Estate located on Hendrik Potgieter road, Eagle Canyon Golf Estate located along Christiaan De Wet road, Ruimsig Golf Estate located along Peter Road and Willowbrook Estate located along Van Dalen Road. 

Private and government schools are based all around for the educational needs of Roodepoort’s children. Surrounding schools include Curro Academy Wilgeheuwel, Maragon Ruimsig, Laerskool Helderkruin, Laerskool Horison, Hoerskool Bastion, Westridge High and many more.

Roodepoort attractions

The well-known Clearwater Mall located on the corner of Christiaan de Wet and Hendrik Potgieter Road became the main attraction with over 240 shops, restaurants and entertainment venues creating the perfect weekend outing.

Silverstar Casino is regarded as the Westrand’s number one entertainment destination with outdoor restaurants, casino, movies, arcade games, bowling, barnyard entertainment and a day spa. This fun filled destination is located just off the N14 on the border of Roodepoort and Krugersdorp. 

Several main arterial routes in Roodepoort such as 14th Avenue, Hendrik Potgieter Road, Christiaan de Wet Road and the N1 Freeway created high demand for commercial property which lead to the spectacular development of Constantia Park situated on the highly visible corner of Hendrik Potgieter Road. Multiple other office parks in Roodepoort include Constantia View Office Estate, Quadrum Office Park, Meersig, Valley View Office Park, Willowvale Office Park, Coldstream Office Park, Willowbrook Office Park, Clearwater Office Park and many more.

Commercial rentals in Roodepoort

Commercial rentals range between R105-R140 per square meter depending on the grade, facilities, location and market demand. Available commercial office rentals range between 100m² to 3,000m². Well-known companies based in Roodepoort include ABSA, Standard Bank, MTN, Prime Media, PSG Wealth, Afrisam and AON Insurance.

Roodepoort welcomes a spectacular new development, Wellness Crossing, which commenced with its first phase in March 2017. Wellness Crossing will be a multipurpose medical centre comprising of a day hospital, medical suites and wellness activities. The Nedbank Lakeview development in Constantia Kloof is well underway and has been under construction since June 2017. 

Many development and investment opportunities have become available within the West Rand with vacant land measuring between 1ha – 60ha zoned for residential, commercial and retail development. Commercial offices based in Ruimsig are selling for R1 500 000 measuring between 130m² to 600m².
