Roodepoort is one of Johannesburg’s well known districts located on the borderline of Johannesburg and the West Rand. Popular for its red soil, growing residential area and partially dominated light industrial and small businesses.
The history of Roodepoort
Roodepoort became known years back in 1884 when Fred Struben discovered the first payable gold in the area which he named Confidence Reef, a rocky outcrop in the centre of Roodepoort. During this time Roodepoort consisted of 9 farms. Four of the farms – Roodepoort, Vogelstruisfontein, Paardekraal and Wilgespruit. These farms were soon declared public diggings after the discovery of gold captured the interests of diggers and soon became a shantytown. The Goldfields Diggers Committee was formed in 1888 and represented the farmers’ interest. This became the first form of local government known as Roodepoort-Maraisburg.

Roodepoort has evolved into a popular urban area, predominantly residential, with supporting urban amenities for an estimated population of 300 000 residents. The growing population created a need for residential development leading to many sectional title holdings developed along Hendrik Potgieter road. Suburbs in Roodepoort include Allen’s Nek, Helderkruin, Ruimsig, Featherbrooke, Willowbrook, Little Falls, Strubensvalley, Constantia Kloof, Florida and Weltevreden Park.

Silverstar Casino is regarded as the Westrand’s number one entertainment destination with outdoor restaurants, casino, movies, arcade games, bowling, barnyard entertainment and a day spa. This fun filled destination is located just off the N14 on the border of Roodepoort and Krugersdorp.
Several main arterial routes in Roodepoort such as 14th Avenue, Hendrik Potgieter Road, Christiaan de Wet Road and the N1 Freeway created high demand for commercial property which lead to the spectacular development of Constantia Park situated on the highly visible corner of Hendrik Potgieter Road.
